All the red.

Could I be wearing more red?! I’ve teamed my red coat and boots with a cute tee from Simply Be for my second look.

Photo of white t-shirt with the word "Paris" in red and a gold heart

I love this t-shirt! The red and gold go perfectly and I couldn’t resist but team it with my new red coat. I got the coat from Primark, it was a total steal, and how amazing is the shade?! The thing I love about the tee is the flash of gold means you can wear it as a bit more dressy. But it still works just as well as a casual top.

These photos were taken a few weeks ago on a Sunday morning. I took photos of a couple of outfits on that morning so it meant a quick change in the car…! And it was a very quick change, because it was freezing! I teamed the t-shirt with my Levi’s again, seriously loving them so much. Also, I chucked on a pair of red boots that I’ve had for years.

I was very close to throwing these very red boots out, well actually attempt to sell them on eBay, a couple of years ago. But like many things I plan to sell on eBay, they sat in a bag for a while and I eventually moved them to mine from my Mum’s about a month ago. I’d forgotten how comfy they were and I actually quite like them with my jeans. Saying this, I have so many pairs of shoes and boots this might be their only wear this winter.

There were a lot of dog walkers out this Sunday morning, and of course me not being a huge dog person (to clarify, I’m actually afraid of dogs rather than not liking them) meant that they were attracted to me! Made the photo taking experience a bit more interesting.

Sunday morning blog photos.

I think this is possibly the first time I’ve ever done this. Got up early on a Sunday, solely with the purpose of taking blog photos.

Mark and I are pretty busy over the next couple of weeks so I had to try and squeeze in some photos this weekend. It was freezing, I mean really freezing! I had the fun job of scraping the car before we could set off. On Saturday night after the rugby we stayed at my Mum’s, so it worked out nicely that we could take the opportunity to get some photos in my very pretty (not at all biased) home town of Linlithgow. My first location choice was Linlithgow Palace but it was crazy busy, however luckily there’s no shortage of pretty places.

I was contacted a couple of weeks ago by Simply Be looking to do a collaboration with me. I’m not going to lie, my first thoughts on the email were “but I’m not plus size”. After this initial thought, I remembered that their adverts state they start at size 12. As a size 10-12 I thought I would definitely find some stuff on the website. And actually, some of their pieces do even start at size 10. What’s more, they are really nice and affordable.

I absolutely love this faux fur jacket! It’s so soft and the perfect shade of blue. Described as navy, although it’s not the shade of navy where you’re debating whether it’s black or blue so it would go equally as well with a pair of black skinnies as my light blue Levi’s. I teamed the jacket and jeans combo with a silver glittery jumper, and these fabulous silver glitter boots. I’ve had these boots about a year now. It was almost as if a magnetic force pulled me towards them when I saw them in the shop. I needed these in my life. Sunday was the first time I wore them…story of my life!

This outfit would be perfect for lunch and drinks during December. The jumper is just the right amount of glittery to be festive while being subtle at the same time. I added my worn, and very ripped Levi’s because sometimes it’s nice to not wear skinny jeans. Also, I really like the look of jeans that are considered more casual with a heeled boot.

Silver glittery heeled bootsI was actually surprised at how cosy the jacket is. Normally as the temperature drops at this time of year I opt for a longer coat but even with the shorter length this one still keeps you warm.

Simply Be have some really great going out tops, coats and dresses. All perfect for the party season. Whether you need some all out sparkle for your Christmas night out, or are looking for something to smarten up your jeans for lunch or a trip to the Christmas market, they have you sorted. And as with most retailers this Friday (24.11) they will have some Black Friday deals so you can bag that perfect party dress with money off. Which always makes shopping more fun!

This is the first look in a series I have for you this week. Keep an eye on my social media and the blog for more.

I freakin’ love autumn!

The thought of summer excites me but in Scotland you only really have the thought of summer. Every year I just end up looking forward to the end of it and the point when it becomes acceptable to wear black tights again.

There’s so much to love about autumn. The cool, crisp weather. The leaves turning the most amazing red and orange colours and falling off the trees. The fallen leaves crunching under your feet. Pumpkin spice lattes. And another great thing is getting to shop for new clothes, cosy knits, boots and winter coats!

I’ve put together a few bits that I’m loving right now and that are perfect for autumn and winter!

Dr Martens Adrian Smooth loafer – since getting my Dr Martens Chelsea boots last year I’ve been coveting another pair of Docs, probably helped by the fact I didn’t get the crippling pain I was expecting while breaking them in. I have loved the look of Docs for years but lacked the confidence to wear them. These are perfectly my style, I love giving a cute dress or skirt a bit of an edge with a pair of not so pretty shoes.

Fat Face Leia denim pinafore – one of the great things about autumn is getting to dig the tights back out again. A lot of the time during the “warmer” months I’m a jeans and tee kinda girl and denim is such an easy casual thing to wear. Therefore a denim dress for the winter is a no brainer. The thing I love about a pinafore is that much like jeans, you can pair it with different tops to make different outfits. This dress with a black polo neck, tights and boots is the perfect cosy look.

Boden red and white Breton top – so it may be known that I’m a sucker for a breton tee. I honestly don’t know why I’m so drawn to them, I think it’s maybe just cause they’re an easy go to and it doesn’t look as plain as a white top with jeans. I’m not sure my obsession will ever end but I feel like I maybe need to mix up the colours a bit so I own more than black and white ones. I love the colour on this and it’s definitely a way for me to wear a bit more red (and also look like Where’s Wally while I’m at it).

New Look Black Floral Brocade Heeled Boots – I’m so glad embroidery is still on trend! These boots are amazing and the perfect way to dress up a pair of skinny black jeans.

New Look Red Longline Collared Coat – I normally go for a black winter coat but this is lovely. I’m a big fan of the bold colour and it would make a nice change from my usual black or grey.

New Look Mustard Yellow Suedette Biker Jacket – I think mustard yellow is my favourite autumn colour. This jacket is perfect for layering and wearing with a big scarf and bobble hat to keep you warm before you really need to dig out the winter coat.

Fat Face Washed Black Super Skinny Jeans – Fat Face is a company I only really discovered earlier on this year. I know they’ve been around for years but their style is not always a look I’ve gone for. That being said, they make damn good jeans, plus the added bonus is that they are an ethical company.

What’s your wishlist this autumn?

All the 90’s vibes with this dress!

A couple of weeks ago we headed through to Edinburgh for the day. I was taking advantage of (what I thought was) the last of the summer sun.

I got this cute dress before we headed to Berlin, it gives me all kinds of 90’s feels. I love the floral print and the soft pink shade of the dress. The fabric is very light and summery. In Scotland, light flowing fabric isn’t always a good thing, I live in a very windy country! I put a slip on underneath this, both to keep me a bit warmer and also so my undies weren’t on show to everyone when my dress blew up in a gust of wind.

We had a day of Festival fun planned, so I wanted to wear shoes I could walk about in. Converse are always my go to for comfort and I love the way they look teamed with a dress, it gives an cute girly outfit a bit of a grungy edge. I almost didn’t go for the all white cons, I’m a fan of the classics (white, red and blue), but I’m glad I went for these as they go with so much more.

Our day started off with a trip to Festival Village: Waverley where we filled our faces with some very yummy food (you can read about our visit here). I took the opportunity of the nice weather to pop into Princes Street Gardens and get some photos. I often feel quite ashamed of how little I’ve done and seen in my own country! Climbing Scott Monument is yet another thing I’ve still got to do. Maybe I need to add this to my list!

During the summer a denim jacket is my go to. Unfortunately I don’t live in a country that really gets much of a summer and in Scotland you really need to be prepared for all weather. Saying we can get four seasons in one day is no exaggeration! Yesterday it was sunny, rainy and there was hail… A denim jacket needs to have some pins on it, I love collecting them and adding them on. This super cute avocado was bought recently from Pie in the Sky, I love it, almost as much as I love actual avocados!

I am currently ALL about a backpack! I’m really glad they’re in fashion right now because the old lady in me loves how practical and comfy they are if you’re on a day out. I picked this one up in TKMaxx recently and it’s hardly been off my back since. It’s funny to think at one point when I was a teenager at high school I was so desperate to be “grown up” and ditch the backpack (I had a Warehouse messenger bag, who else remembers them?!) and now I love them!

I’m never going to be the type that has a job where I have to wear a boring business suit.

But working 9 to 5 in an office job doesn’t mean a boring work wardrobe! I like to look smart at work but I also like to show a bit of myself in how I dress for the office.

After four months of being out of work due to redundancy I started a new job at the start of June! And a new job means a new work wardrobe (well it does for me anyway)! So before I started working again I did a bit of shopping and managed to find a load of stuff that was still quirky enough for me, but at the same time work appropriate.

When putting together your work wardrobe I would definitely suggest shopping in the obvious shops like Marks & Spencer and Next and yes, even Matalan. The key to making an outfit your own is how you put it together and you can find some gems that you might not have expected in these shops. For example I got the gingham and floral trousers from Marks & Spencer! I was expecting to pick up a couple of pairs of plain black trousers and I came out with patterned ones instead! Another great place to look is supermarkets, Asda and Tesco often have some great options for work dresses or tops and blouses that don’t break the bank. I got the frilly white shirt and magenta one from Asda. Add some statement jewellery and a great pair of shoes and you’re winning.

Clockwise from top left: black culottes – New Look // trumpet sleeve top – Matalan // gingham trousers – Marks & Spencer // silver shoes – New Look // cream top – Next // wide strap vest – Matalan // pink culottes – New Look // lace swing vest – Matalan // floral trousers – Marks & Spencer

In my last job I had to wear a work pass to allow me to get around the building and I always despaired at how ugly a lot of the lanyards were. They definitely did not enhance an outfit that’s for sure! At the start of the year I came across Maisie-Jane, a company that have realised aesthetically pleasing lanyards were missing in the workplace. When I first discovered them I was just about to be made redundant so wasn’t in the market for one but it’s a company that stuck in my mind. Their lanyards look just like necklaces with a clip for your work pass, and the beauty of them is that you can remove the clip and pass, turning it into a necklace if you are going out after work!

I’m running a competition over on Instagram to win one of these lanyards and if you use code FrocksandFairyCakes on the Maisie-Jane website you will get 20% off your order (until the end of June 2017)!
